Look at that train coming hard and fast
Into some future, out of some past
A million tons of American Dream
Busting out of some movie scene

You say that it’ll turn your life around
You pray that it’ll be glory bound
You hope, you cry, you laugh and sigh
When the damn thing simply rolls on by

But sometimes a train is just a train
A random traveler without a name
One more faceless empty stare
Racing off to who knows where
Don’t think too hard, don’t rack your brain
Sometimes a train is just a train

You can feel its thunder, hear its whistle blow
You can tell yourself you’re good to go
But not every engine can bear the weight
Of one man’s heart or another man’s fate

But sometimes a train is just a train
Rusting wheels on a western plain
A ghost machine that’s here and gone
Neither good nor bad, right or wrong
There are things in life that you can’t explain
Like sometimes a train is just a train

But if you hold on tight, somewhere down the line
You’ll be right on track, right on time

That finally carries the very thing
You’ve been working for year after year
Now it’s coming, now it’s here
Just hold your ground and don’t complain

And when we’re through with life’s joy and pain
And heaven’s gate is opening
And “all aboard” the angels sing
We’ll ride on up with golden wing
But only faith, hope and love remain
